“Bao Carabao Story”
Tana Eamniyom (Bom) is a familiar face, having appeared in many music videos and a Channel 3 drama. But Bom became even more well-known when he appeared in Young ’Bao Carabao: The Movie playing Yuenyong Opakul, better known as Ad Carabao, the leader of legendary rock band Carabao.
Directed by Yuthakorn Sukmuktapha, the film tells the story of Ad and Carabao from 1980 to the peak of the band’s popularity in 1985, when their album Made in Thailand was released. The album sold more than five million copies and remains the best-selling album in Thailand. Carabao, who have released 92 albums over a period of more than 30 years, have at times attracted audiences of 60,000 people to their concerts.
Bom was chosen for the role just two weeks before shooting began, after the first choice, singer Toon Bodyslam, withdrew. Bom said that he didn’t mind being second choice because he thinks it’s an honour to play Ad on-screen and that anybody would have jumped at the chance.
Bom said that he needed to work hard to prepare himself in just two weeks. Part of his preparation included watching footage of old Carabao concerts, seeing Carabao play live and talking with Ad in person.
“Ad might look like a hot-tempered guy, but he’s actually very kind and told me that I could ask him anything,” Bom said. “I talked to him about the movie, and asked him about his feelings and attitudes, especially regarding the fateful student-led protest of October 14, 1973.”
Bom added that he also read books about October 14 so that I would better understand what had happened.
In the time the movie shows, Ad’s age was close to Bom’s age now, but the differences between the two are considerable. Bom found that Ad’s generation grew up a lot faster. Bom said that he’s fascinated with Carabao’s music and how their lyrics reflect Ad’s real life.
“It’s such a wonderful story, how seven people from different family backgrounds got together to form a band,” Bom said. “At first, some of the band members were more like enemies than friends, but they were all dedicated to their dreams. Some even resigned from their jobs for the band.”
Bom believes that the members of Carabao are great role models for those who want to make their dreams come true.
